◙ The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. ◙ Before downloading any software from the internet type it into http://groups.google.com/ to see if that title is known for spyware or viruses. Google Groups has over 1 billion posts spanning 25 years to help you. Even after checking it there ALWAYS scan it before opening it. You just can't be too careful. -- Smart Computing Magazine

◙ A lot of the download sites like http://www.download.com/ and http://www.tucows.com/ scan software before releasing it to the public. But just for safety sake you should still scan it yourself.

Kerio Personal Firewall
The original Kerio 2.1.5 is available at LastFreeware. It is an excellent free firewall that many prefer to later, bloated versions of Kerio:

Note that the free and paid versions of Sunbelt Kerio are the same. If you don't buy the product some advanced features are automatically turned off after 30 days. For home users, Kerio Personal Firewall 4 is available in two flavors - the full edition and the limited free edition.

the best security configuration for windows 98 is
1)avast 4.7 anti-virus(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html),a good all round virus scanner and good at protecting windows 98(proven)
2)spy-bot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) a very good and reliable spyware cleaner and defender,10/10
3)lavasoft adaware(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) another top marks for a good anti-adware program, also very good at preventing the cause of pop ups
4)spyware blaster(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)this is not a scanner or cleaner, but protects your p.c so infection cannot get on it in the first place, also works with mozzila firefox
5)yahoo toolbar(http://uk.toolbar.yahoo.com/) a good utility i used when i had 98,it has a pop up blocker and a very good anti-spy,good at finding data miners and tracking cookies
you can use all this software at the same time on windows 98 ,as i used to and considering 98,s security flaws it protected quite well
however ,as you know microsoft have stoped doing updates for 98 from last july,so you are opening yourself up to hackers, but by using a free firewall will make your p.c safer
here is a list of a few free firewalls
1)http://www.download.com/Ashampoo-FireWall/3000-10435_4-10575188.html?tag=lst-0-2
2)http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10550364.html?tag=lst-0-8
3)http://www.download.com/AS3-Personal-Firewall/3000-10435_4-10523855.html?tag=lst-0-1
4)http://www.download.com/Minute-Personal-Firewall/3000-10435_4-10455106.html?tag=lst-0-3
5)http://www.download.com/ZoneProtect-Personal-Firewall/3000-10435_4-10366934.html?tag=lst-0-8
6)http://www.download.com/WyvernWorks-Firewall-2004/3000-10435_4-10280363.html?tag=lst-0-2
all these are totally free and are compatible with windows 98,so i would recommend you install one of these to protect you while on-line,the most dangerous place to be with windows 98,as hackers are using 98 as targets due to the limited security people use with it,so a firewall is a must
so if you use a anti-virus,2 to 3 anti-spyware and 1 firewall program ,that should keep you pretty well secure while on-line,but just remember to pratice safe surfing, this can make your security programs work better
any more problems with windows 98 ,please let me know
good luck
