the windows are powered and I was just putting the window up when I heard a loud popping noise and boom... the passenger front window no longer works. I tried pressing the up/down button a few times and it sounds like the motor is still working but there was some crunching noises as well.

I've called the Jeep dealer and they're telling me that it's likely that a cable snapped, which is a part of the regulator assembly and that if the cable is gone, the entire assembly must be replaced. They've quoted me $122 for labor and $227 for the part. I don't really have extra money laying around to get this done but since it's a safety issue, I need the window fixed asap. The tape that's holding the window up may not last for much longer.

I've been trying to research online how to replace the regulator on my own...or to atleast remove the interior door panel to see for myself what's the problem is so that if I have to take my Jeep to a dealer, they don't rip me off by telling me a bunch of

i need all the help I can get before I end up spending all this money with the dealership. the more that I can do on my own, the better off for me.

thanks in advance for your help

It definitely sounds like the regulator has gone bad. The regulator is the assembly that the power window motor or the manual crank is attached to and it raises and lowers the window. The regulator in your Jeep uses a cable wound around a drum to operate the window instead of a mechanical scissor arm assembly. The crunching you are hearing is probably the cable which has somehow gotten tangled up or has come off the drum. When that happens, the motor will only run for a few seconds until the cable is stretched tight and stops it. You can find an aftermarket regulator for around $100 and you can probably have it installed at a local auto glass shop for about $100. That's better than than the dealer. Good luck!

First you look for the screws that you can see and remove them. Then they sell a tool that prys the clips that hold the door panel out of their holes. I usually buy new ones, it seems like if I try to replace the old ones they don't hold right. At least once you have the door panel off you can look in there, It is hard to get you hands in there though. You can also get repair manuals from a parts store like Auto Zone. You can check other places for the part you need too. Auto Zone is a lot cheaper than a dealer and and they may have someone working there who does repair part time.

After you remove the door panel, it's still long way to remove the window regulator, plus if the cable snapped, it might be impossible to reuse old parts, so it's really better to have it done by a mechanic. 122 + 227 sounds reasonable
