Marijuana isn't addictive, it can't kill you overnight, and it won't hurl your life into a downward spiral.

Alcohol can do all of these things in the wrong hands.

So why isn't marijuana legal?

It's a political decision, not a medical one. It would be unpopular to legalize it because of the amount of uninformed people out there.

Because the government is scared of anything other than the status quo.

From the origins of the drug culture in the US, Marijuana was always related to the Mexican immigrants. Even after the Marihuana act of 1934 was passed to prevent the mass use of the hemp plant (as clothing or paper, challenging both Dupont who was coming out with Rayon, and the logging companies, who didn't want people to realize that hemp produces more paper with less waste than trees), posession and use of reefer wasn't frowned upon as much as it is today.

In the late '60s and continuing through the '70s, marijuana was used more and more by whites. So this once and former "Mexican" problem was becoming a "white" problem. Cue Nixon's "War on Drugs". Now, billions of tax dollars and hundreds of overcrowded prisons later, we realize that this war on drugs has solved nothing, but do nothing to stop it.

Alcohol, on the other hand, has always been a "white" intoxicant. The prohibition movement only ended because it was women's and church groups in the '20s, not government groups, who called for its' ban.

What? The government might be racist? Act like you never saw that coming.

you're right alcohol is way worse than marijuana, marijuana is like a recreational tool.

my guess is that alcohol has been such a big part of the lives of Americans and the world, so to ban alcohol would be catastrophic

I could definitely imagine an alternate reality where weed smoking was legal and alcohol was illegal and had to be smuggled in from 3rd world countries

Not true. It can be very addictive, it can kill you if you are under the influence and are driving. And I have a very close relative who has lost his wife and kids, because his entire pay check is going towards pot. He has nowhere to live, he comes to my house to take a shower. He has now lost his job. I would call that a downward spiral.

marijuana isn't legal because the government believes that it can cause more harm then alcohol can...i say they're wrong in different studies they have found that alcohol can make even the sweetest person become violent so i say they should legalize marijuana...but even still making it not illegal doesn't stop teens.

Marijuana IS addictive, it can seriously impair your mind and cause death by misadventure and it will certainly drain ambition and cognitive function from your brain.

Just like alcohol.

That aside, it is too late to keep society away from the excesses of drinking.

Alcohol seriously harms society by ruining lives. It is not too late to keep marijuana from harming society in a similar fashion.

Just because we tolerate one social evil, does not mean we should allow all others free reign.

It is legal in some areas and some instances.

Why is tobacco legal when it kills more Americans than auto accidents or terrorists?
