They way your touch pad works is to have to electrically charged pads, that have cross connections in them, so that when you touch in a certain spot, the two pads touch together in that spot and electricity flows through the micro-wires at that point. If you are always pressing too hard, you can cause the seperation of the two pads to be eliminated, and the pads might be touch and shorting all over the place. In that case you will have to have a new one installed. Otherwise, you may just need to calibrate your touch pad.
To do this, go to Start>>>Settings>>>Control Panel. Switch to Classic view and double click over the Mouse Icon. Swicth through the tabs until you find something about calibrating it or zeroing it out. Then just follow the given instructions.

This sounds like a touchpad problem, like the first responder mentioned.
If you can't be bothered to replace the touchpad (and who can blame you) you can always get a mouse that'll plug in through your USB port. Miniature mice specifically made for on-the-go laptoppers usually don't run over $20 (USD), and full-size optical mice go for even cheaper (as cheap as $3)
The important thing that a lot of people AREN'T mentioning is that if you DO decide to get another mouse, via USB, it's not going to stop the cursor drifting. Once you get your new mouse plugged in, I suggest going into Start->Control Panel-> Mouse (after switching to classic view, like the first responder said) and disabling your original touchpad.
I mean, if you're using a secondary mouse, why would you need the touchpad, right?
Navigating that applet can be a little confusing, but the keyword you're going to be looking for is "Pointing device." Also, it depends on the manufacturer and the drivers they're supplying you with. In any case, you can ALWAYS disable point and touch devices through the mouse applet. You'll most likely come up with two, maybe even three if that little sausage wedged between the keys also comes up.
Sorry I can't be more specific, I remember that when my girlfriend's touchpad started acting up in EXACTLY the same way you described, we got her a USB mouse... and the problem didn't go away until we disabled the original touchpad under the mouse options.

Thank you for asking this question, mine is not a laptop, but my cursor gets lost, and it takes a few seconds for me to find it, I thought maybe a piece of dirt got inside.
I know I didn't answer your question, but I am also curious.

its the navigator between the keys it must be getting slightly stuck every now and then. try spraying some condensed air around it and move it around while you are spraying it maybe that will help.
good luck
