It depends on what Browser you are using. If you have a Mac, get Camino or Mozzilla browser. If you have Windows, try Firefox. With a clean install, you can eliminate the crap that is affecting your current browser. Internet Explorer is full of bugs.

hopefully you tried rightclicking somewhere on the upper toolbar and then leftclicked on the address bar choice. Make sure your toolbar is on the top of the screen rather than on the sides.

Sounds like you've been hijacked maybe. Run a adware/spyware check.

Go to view, then toolbars and click on navigation toolbar. Happened to me a couple of times couldnt figure it out.
