I don't have children....my husband doesn't want them for quite a while. I want to stop using hormonal contraceptives because I smoke. I want to know of any complications or convenience of an IUD.

I tried to quit smoking. It's very difficult. I fear having a blood clot while on the pill. I know I should quit smoking, but I feel I can ease into quitting instead of fear of having a stroke.

I have an IUD. I love mine! I don't have to worry about taking pills everyday or nothing! My periods are lighter than before, and they last only 3-4 days now! I don't get cramps anymore! I love mine. I have a Mirena! Ask your Dr. about it!

I don't know what kind thorny rose had, but maybe it was the cheap kind because IUD make life easier, not harder.

I had an IUD put in when I was about 28 and I would advise you not to even think about it. I had complications which led to me becoming anaemic ( I lost a lot of blood) and then being hospitalised and given a curette. My body rejected the IUD in a big way.
I must say that this is my experience and this may not happen to you but I have heard of quite a few women that have had big problems with the IUD.
Talk to your doctor and see what he has to say about them before you listen to me or anybody else. Things may have improved since I had it done.
Can I just finish off by saying that you are quitting the lesser of the two evils. Think about it.

Most doctors won't insert and IUD unless you have had children because your uterus is not large enough. The IUD is in a T shape when it is inside you, but if your uterus is not big enough, the arms of the "T" won't open, and it won't fit or stay in place. Try the Nuva Ring, Depo, diaphram, or condoms if you don't want to be on the pill.

Best thing to do is discuss it with your Ob/Gyn. You can also visit these sites: www.mirena.com and www.paragard.com My doctor recommended the mirena for me, said she uses it herslf. I noticed the mirena is recommended for women who have already had one child but didn't see any mention of that at the paragard site. Good luck,

P.S. You should stop smoking anyway, it's bad for you.
