I hate it. I hate when someone pretends they're taking a moment out of their so-called busy day to walk up and waste my time to tell me how hot it is outside. I'm sweating my butt off too. If you're going to make the nice gesture of speaking to me, at least make it personal. I always have something to say that's not small talk. What's so hard about it? "It's a pretty day"...yeah, so? I have eyes! I can see how nice it is outside. Don't get me wrong, I love talking to people. I am a pretty outgoing guy. But I just can't stand the small talk.

Can someone sell me on the idea that there might actually be a point to it? Or does everyone else secretly hate it as much as me?

It's annoying that you even brought that up. By the way, can you kiss my big butt? Did you know it is starting to rain outside where I live? I was going to cut the grass today and now look. Instead I am responding to your lame question. People small talk with you cause you are boring. You probably sit around with a grumpy face. Try being friendly to people. You are not as outgoing as you think. Try to be funny. Tell a joke so they can laugh before they start with the so called small talk. Do you have sense of humor to even do that???

I kinda hate small talk too, but I do it. I feel like I have to say something when I'm sitting in the doctors office with only one other person or if I walk by someone I feel obligated to say hello. And you know, not all cultures are accustomed to "small talk". For instance, I have a friend that is from South Africa and she said when she first came here to America, she couldn't understand why strangers would greet her with "hellos" while passing each other like on a sidewalk or whatever. She said people in her country would never do that. I think pretty much small talk is just used as an ice breaker or conversation starter. This was a good question! Hey by the way, it's a pretty day isn't it?

Maybe it is just a conversation starter and they expect it to lead somewhere.

Maybe they are nervous but still trying.

Maybe they are nice.

Maybe they don't know you very well and are trying to stay on subjects that won't set you off like a lunatic?

Maybe to them the weather IS important?
