I'd choose a Republican -- one who was a fervent Bush apologist. Actually one from the Senate who repeatedly and knowingly blocked investigations into wrong-doing and over-reaching -- Roberts from Kansas is one possibility. Republicans have been in control - leading for six years. It seems only fair that they get us back on track.
Naturally we will need a different party control of the Congress for checks and balances between branches of government. Congress can put some brakes on the administrations' spending. Promoting political agendas with fake news videos, public relations enterprises, paying journalists, and a host of shady expenditures crosses the line. It is unnecessary to bankroll flights in Air Force I and transport planes with vehicles all over the US promoting political programs that are contrary to the good of the people ... during an energy crisis. Or merely trips for Bush to Texas for the week-end to vote or Cheney to Arizona for the week-end to hunt friends -- rather quail. Let the President enjoy Camp David. Let's stop silly "recess appointments" of cronies to bypass the will of the Senate. And where is it written that tax payers pay a salary to Karl Rove, Republican strategist and polluter of the political process. This stuff has to end. Lots of work to be done and lots of oversight and accounting. So much work that recesses should be canceled. Recess is too childish anyway.
Yes, it would be good to let a Republican wallow in accolades of success when all the policies are proved to have been right -- or take the shame and humiliation should the opposite hold true.

Chuck Hagel, Senator from Nebraska.
His generally conservative leanings match mine, but, more importantly, he judges each issue individually. Whether a solution works or not is more important to him than ideology.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have the charisma of John McCain, Joe Biden, or Hillary Clinton, so his chances are pretty small.
Of candidates with a realistic chance, I like John McCain most.

I would choose a philosopher who DOES NOT want the job!
I would certainly not vote for a shameless, lying, conniving, crooked politician with ties to the super-rich and/or special interests!
There's not a single Republican or Democratic candidate or politicians out there that I would vote for. So, it looks like I'll be doing what everyone has been trying to do for the past few decades... vote for the lesser of two evils and hope for the best.

If it could be any one, it would be Colon Powell. Or Normon Schwartzcough (I know I spelled it all wrong). In times like this-as much as I would normally hate the idea, we need a strong military leader, not a law student or rogue's scholar. We need some one with a brain and a set of balls to back it up.

Joe Biden from Delaware. He stands about as much chance of getting the nomination as I do since he's a straight-shooter, doesn't mince words, won't take crap from people and is one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable people in the Senate. He reminds me of Harry Truman, even though I wasn't around when old Harry was President.

John McCain......he's a moderate, a man of integrity, an American hero, and he has friends in both parties so he could accomplish more than anyone I can think of. If either an extreme left or right wing candidate is elected we can expect nothing but gridlock.

I would chose Gandhi because he used peace as a powerful tool to accomplish good for his people against suppression. Imagine what it could do for a country that wasn't suppressed.
