Is it Theo Epstein, pitching, injuries........

I think you gotta blame pitching. They allowed 49 runs in 5 games against the Yankees this past weekend. Wells & Schilling did good this weekend, but that's it. The other starters were bad & the bullpen was horrible.

Well, the pitching is mostly to blame, but it's not the pitchers' fault. it's the managers who didn't put a good bullpen together. we also lost Johnny Damon (traitor!!!), and he was the hitter who just kinda linked the batting the whole lineup together, and provided a solid start. also, Jason Veritek is down for the count, and he's been a pretty solid team player (note captain's "C" on uniform). overall, the strong components of the team have been pulling more than their own weight, and the weaker components are just pulling the team down. the team is weakening, and therefore, losing.

The pitching has definitely been the weakest link in the chain for the Sox, but the offense hasn't exactly lived up to precedent. Coco Crisp and Alex Gonzalez are poor replacements for Johnny Damon and Orlando Cabrera. The injuries sure haven't helped, but I'm not sure this team was good enough to make the playoffs in the first place. The failure to bring in some pitching before the trade deadline was probably the final nail in the coffin.

They all play a part. Who knows how that series would've turned out if Varitek was the everyday catcher instead of being injured, and Matt Clement was in the rotation. Theo Epstein left every pitcher (save David Wells) in for too long, reliever or starter. The Red Sox could've won Monday if Javy Lopez could block the ball.

I agree that the pitching has been horrible for the most part. But there have been issues with the catching, defense and offensively too. Maybe not as obvious but it is there. But when it comes down to blame, everyone is part of the team. The Patriots walked out onto the field as a team rather than being introduced individually. That was a class act. The Sox won the WS as a team. No individuals. That is what got them there. If the Sox go down, they should do it as a team and not lay blame on any one area. And so should their fans. Just my thoughts.

the pitching staff. just a bad run. timlin, foulke and company are better than how they have been playing. the starters are in a rutt as well. wakefield is hurt, clement has got his problems, and varitek is not behind the plate to guide the entire pitching staff. varitek's injury is the biggest problem. also, trot nixon is hurt and ortiz is in a slump. now manny ramirez is injured. coco crisp was hurt and he is not playing to his potential. also, alex gonzales is hurt.
i'm a true baseball fan who enjoys watching all the teams so i understand many teams have injuries but losing varitek has been super major. it would be like losing jeter for the yankees, halladay for the bluejays, pudge rodrigues for the tigers, santana for the twins, young for the rangers, vladmir guerero for the angels, zito, for athletics or jenks for the white sox.
francona shouldn't get any blame!

Definitely the pitching...

But wouldn't the general manager be also to be blamed for not making any trades before the deadline???

The Yanks got Abreau.... since then he's batted .395 for them (only .277 for Phils), and their record has been 14-7 compared to the Red Sox record of 6-14.....

I'm surprised the Sox didn't try and beef up their team for a run at the playoffs.... its like they had no sense of urgency whatsoever!

The front office for making such bad moves, like Damon getting traded to the Yankees and getting Crisp as he hasn't really helped, or when they traded Arroyo for Pena, and they didn't do anyhting at the trading deadline unlike the Yankees.

why not blame the fact that they are old. They lost their best player to injury and the fan don't know anything about baseball outside of their little red sox world
