Basically it is a version of a program BEFORE the final version. It could be complete but when a program is beta tested, it is released to the general public (usually free) so that they can get it, install it, and use it.

The purpose is for people to use it and report any bugs/malfunctions if they find any. The bugs are fixed and then the program is released. So basically, the software companies use general public as testers.

Beta Testing is when you have a software program that needs testing outside of a controlled environment. You release the software as Beta to clients or customers or even the general public. The catch for is that the software will still have bugs and may not fully work; this helps the software producer find and fix defects.

Beta testing takes place near the end of development of a software product. Testers use the software as it would be used by end users and try to find problems or bugs in the software. Some will argue the beta testing is not complete until the product is shipped out to the public and used in the real world, where beta testing is completed by real users who uncover the (hard to find) problems.

A beta Test of a program is when the final version isn't released, but this intermediate version (the beta test) is released to the public to help the developers to find bugs.

A beta is an almost finished version of a piece of software that is released to public for free to help find the bugs in it. Usually this version has no warranty.

This allows tech savvy users to get acquainted with the new software and allows the company to have many users finding the bugs in the software which saves them money. Win win for both.

Its part of the product development life cycle.

Let's say you write a program that adds two numbers and divide it by a third.

Let's say you code it, compile it, and in your computer, you run it, and the product gives, what you think, is the right answer. But since you might need to input lots of different numbers to be sure you've run to most scenarios, you stage a 'Beta Test', in which you deliver your product, to a certain public that test the product, and report whatever bugs they found. You need to classify all the bugs reported : 'critical', 'high priority' 'low priority' 'cosmetical', or whatever way you want to. Then you have to decide on which bugs to correct to still be on time. You'd probably don't want any critical nor high level bugs, but you might decide on launching on med and low level issues.

Beta testing is a way that software developers test their software before they release it. Its usually free to beta test games and software and to a certain extent they will expect you to report bugs that you find with them.

I think it is type of scanning your computer for spyware, trojans and all that stuff. I am not completely sure.
