You should give a concert, but instead of playing it smash it on the stage. All of the great guitar players do this...I've seen it on television!
Do you play any other instruments? Do you have any music theory experience (understanding of chords and such)? If so, guitar is probably something you could learn alone...maybe with a good "beginning guitarist" book though. If not, I would recommend lessons.
It is difficult to begin learning instruments with no musical background on your own. For example, I taught myself two instruments, but I already had lessons for many others before that. (I play ten total, and I was torn between studying music or chemistry at the university; I chose chemistry, but I still like music!)

take a course of ten (group) lessons, it will be fun and you will find out if the guitar is the instrument for you. Even if you decide not, you will have enjoyed a new experience and met new people.
Please give it a try, your friend obviously sees some latent skill in you that we can't, over Yahoo.

Make a cool display for it with old records and pictures and stuff
or
go on line and look up website to teach you tabs and chords of your favorite song. Often times, they'll show you where to press and how to hit that note. Remember: people who play guitar are sexy!
They were giving you something that represents a lot to them. As long as you don't burn it or toss it, I'm sure that they will appreciate your respect for this piece of themselves.

Well...you can always get guitar lessons, and if you can't do that maybe you can teach yourself from books about it. Giving it back or giving it away will only hurt your friend. Try make the most of it to show that you appreciate the gift.

Take lessons and learn how. Or, just play for fun and sound things out. That's how I learned to play a lot of my instruments.

Ask your friend to help you learn how to play. Or call a music store to see if they give lessons.

Learn, of course. Maybe the physical object wasn't the only gift they gave.
