It is true that a scientist on crack may still be able to recite baseball statistics, but the catagory here is politics.
Americans are not stupider, however, the word is spelled.
The role of American citizen is becoming more and more confrontational as the rhetoric gets progressively meaningless.
American can't even agree if we live in a democracy or republic and have little patience for understanding the importance of either.
We have little or no understanding of the thoughts and intents behind our Constitution and assume, apparently, that our leaders do indeed uphold that Constitution at every turn.
Despite all the blathering about whether Coke or Pepsi is better, I mean whether a Democrat or Republican is better, my own history remembers about the worst problem we addressed under the last Democrat President was blowjobs.
Please give me those problems again.
Now we have multiple wars, torture prisons (Gulags?), rapes of 14 yo girls, murders of 1 day old babies.
It is time to stop name calling and working to restain the administration and our government with the cords of the Constitution, if it will still hold them.

It's not a matter of intelligence it is a matter of being hoodwinked. The division in America is without merit. The far left and the far right together only make up 25% of the USA population. whether Democrat or Republican, Libertarian or Constitutionalists 75% are generally centrist or moderate. The high jacking of the once great democratic party by the far left has polarized the two parties. Thus attempting to redefine themselves for a potential voter to make a more clear choice in the voting booth. The media does it's part by capitalizing on this dissension. Thus the infighting begins and ideologies are defended with a passion. It's high time for viable 3rd and 4th parties to balance our republics true thought and convictions. We the People will truly have a voice and it could be heard as was the shot heard around the world.

EXCUSE ME!!!!!! I think it must be you . American's are not getting stupider. I am first generation German-American. I am proud to be an American. Hence I possess both educations back from Germany (certified Administrator) and here in America (studied at the University to become a Social Worker). Not mention speak several languages in which I am able to communicate fluently.
Not all American's are stupid! You are generalizing your statement. There are a few probably who are not willing to educate them selves. But than we must ask why? Than I must tell you, it's cause of the way education is set up here in the USA> We spoon feed the answers to our students. I have seen this happen at the University level. We do not foster self-thinking and self-analytical skills. We using the students in the eduacational system like they are robots. It's very sad... So again, never over generalize Americans as being Stupid! Just a few are!
P.S.: Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Thomas Jefferson, Bill Gates are they Stupid??? Nope these are people who possess INTELLIGENCE< NIVEAU< SMARTS

America is dumbing-down ... no one thinks for him/heself, everything is homogenized, computers do all the work.
For example, when was the last time you did a cash (??!) transaction, and somebody actually counted out the change. (Ok, that was $12.83 out of $20, here's 84,85,90, and thirteen, fourteen, fifteen and twenty)? Mostly they just read the change from the register (here is your $7.17 change). Screws things up if they enter $50 instead of $20 by mistake, or if you give them the 8 additional cents after they have put in the total.
It is embarrasing.
This is a civilization in decline.
And yes, you made a spelling error on your question - but the hostile responses in this case tell me that your answerers want to deflect the question. Must've hit a nerve, no?
However, to protect yourself from ridicule, you might want to check your spelling and syntax next time.

No, most Americans have a wide variety of subject matter to scrutinize on a regular basis. To you some of them may seem mundane but to them their field of study is important to them. Talk to man who is a sports fanatic and he may rattle off tons of statistics that mean nothing to you. In that area he may be brilliant. A scientist may be brilliant in his field of scholarship but may be completely helpless if his car breaks down. It is all relative to each and every individual. With the arrival of computers and cable television people have many more ways to access information then ever before. What each of us studies is important to us whether or not you think we are unintelligent frankly is irrelevant.

It's not stupidity, I believe, it's ideology. Thirty years ago, Americans were pragmatic filled with common sense. Today, everyone seems to be ideological and filled to the brim with opinions.

Despite you challenged spelling i have to agree with you. The process of dumbing down the population has been set in motion by the GOP, because they do not need thinking, critical and questioning people. They need people they can enlist in their armies to conduct wars for oil.
Sad, but a true fact.

The political parties bank on the electorate sharing a "none of us are a dumb as all of us" approach to the elections.
80 percent already know they will vote for the party they support; whether or not they like the candidate or even know their position on the "issues".
