I saw the original "Star Wars" in 1977. There was no earlier film with that plot and those characters.

There is no movie that I know of named Star Wars or anything similar before the George Lucas Star Wars of 1977.
If you've got different information, or additional info that you can add up then maybe someone can help track down what you're looking for...but it's not Star Wars, and the 1977 by George Lucas isn't a remake of anything.
Somebody gave you bad info.

I don't recall there ever being a 60's Star Wars.It is not impossible I suppose.Do you have a website you could post regarding it or perhaps the movie title? Also maybe the name of the actors who starred in it?I google it and couldn't find anything.

I think the movie to which you are referring is
2001: A Space Odyssey .. from the 60s
Star Wars came out in 1977. I waited in line to see it.

I can't help wondering if you're thinking of the first version of THX1138, which George Lucas made while in college, as a school project, I believe. Later he went and remade it as a feature film.
