rap music...has nice beats and stuff, but when it comes to lyrics, its just a bunch of crap...ex. (talking about how much "ice" they have on, who gives a shitt? i basically think that their songs are just about showing off and other crap that no one cares about.

I preface my answer by stating that my documented genetic stock includes contributions from Scotland, Norway, Wales, France, Ireland, Germany and England. I don't deliberately listen to a lot of rap, but given the habits of most rap fans (bass-busting car stereos) or mass-media (commercials and movies and t.v. shows, oh, my...) I don't always have a choice.
Writers are told to "write what you know". Given than most rappers spent their formative years knowing only either the stark terror of barely making ends meet in very unpleasant circumstances or watching really rich people consume, conspicuously (and I'm deliberately omitting references to rappers who came from comfortable origins but obscure them in an attempt to seem like they're 'keeping it real'... and thankfully, more people are seeing the paradox in that statement), it stands to reason that this is what most rap centers on.
I agree with the notion that most rap songs center on the singer bragging about his prowess at
A) violent low-level criminal activity
B) sexual activities or
C) surviving incarceration
... though I would disagree with the notion that rap songs are about 'other crap that no one cares about'. If rap centered on topics that weren't interesting to the audience, then it stands to reason that the CDs would not sell.
For my part, I have no problem with any music that claims to be 'the last refuge of the poor and marginalized', or even of the angry young generations. After all, protest music has a history that is much longer than most people realize (tracking down the lyrics and story behind a song from the 1800's called "The Man Who Never Returned" is left as an exercise for the reader, though the Kingston Trio's version will likely be the starting point for most such searches). Rap that communicates genuine ideas and/or emotion, regardless of whether my caucasian self can understand a word of it, has the potential to enact or further social change, and I'm all for that. However, rap is for the most part less a scream of protest than a roar of inarticulate rage and/or lust, accompanied by excessive quantities of electronic percussion. Frankly, my response to rap of that sort is the same as Steven Taylor [spelling is correct, I'm NOT talking about the Aerosmith guy]: "If your music's saying nothing/Save it for the dentist's chair".

There are many songs where the lyrics are inappropriate. The rappers, writers, and music companies need to realize that almost everyone has access to this music...even young people! It's not good for these rappers to glorify a "ghetto life," gangs, or violence because some children look up to them!

Also, I don't know if I agree about the beats and musicality of rap myself, but that's just my opinion. Everyone has different musical tastes anyway.

I'm an rocker from the 80's, when I ask young people about rap, they say it isn't about the lyrics, as a matter of fact, they can't understand the lyrics on most songs. They say it is about the beat.
I like listening to songs that I understand the lyrics and their about something. But that's just me. Maybe you should try some 80 hard rock bands. :-)

I agree with you. I haven't liked any rap or hip hop since the Biggie and Tupac days and beofre that. There's only a few rappers now that actually have interesting or meaningful lyrics, like Ludacris cracks me up, Eminem is good with words, and maybe one or two more but I can't think of them right now.
