8:30, no later than 9:00. My ten year old has to be in bed no later than 9:30 on a school night. I try to get him in bed around 9:00, but by the time he gets up to get water, then he has to pee, then he has to tell me something, then I threaten to knock him out if he doesn't get to sleep (just kidding), he usually settles down around 9:30.

Depends on how much sleep your child needs and what time they get up for school.
My daughter is 8 and is in bed by 9:30 on school nights. That works well for her.
A friend has a 10 yo son who seems to need a lot more sleep or he is unbearable....goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps till 7am

All children are different but my 7 year old goes to bed at about 9 -9:30 - we read until 10 and he is asleep.
You have to find a time/routine that you can manage and gives your child enough sleep - they say a child needs about 12 hours sleep a night but I think thi sis variable.
Select a time that gives you a life and you can get your child to read to you or you read together for a set period.
Really I think you have to find a comfortable time for both of you

My daughter is 7 in a couple of weeks and I get her to bed for 8.00 on a good night and 8.30 on a bad one. Even then she is up and down like a yo-yo! i would say 8.30 is probs late enough on a school night and in holidays, well if they dont still have to get up for holiday care whilst you work then I am much more relxed, but other wise the regime almost has to stick to the same timings.
