You should handle your guinea pig as often as possible (without overkill) so he/she will become used to you and affectionate. Guinea pigs are very social creatures and it's suggested that you spend extra time with your pet if you have only one pig so that they are not lacking for companionship.
Regardless of how often you end up deciding to handle your pig, please make sure you're handling it correctly to avoid injury (both to the pig and yourself). http://www.guinealynx.com/handling.html

The guinea pig will be okay without being handled, but it won't be as much fun for you. Do you let it run around out of the cage? I understand the problems with holding a guinea pig: pee and poop! You could put something in your lap to protect your clothes.

My sister has a guinea pig and sometimes she doesn't hold it for 3-4 days. guinea pigs don't require constant attention like people think. sure it would like you more if you held it more. you don't have to let it control your life like an owl or iguana, which need constant attention.
so my advise is to try and hold it as much as possible, but don't skip doing your homework or chores because you think it hates you.

no. they are not all that tempermental like hamsters so they really only need to be held if you have kids around because guinea pigs will scratch you and they will be all skiddish and scared.

Of course they do...they are pets just like cats and dogs and need human interaction and excercise just like the rest.
If you don't feel like handling your pig, then you really shouldn't own one. They take a lot of time and need special areas in your home to get their excercise.
