The Royal Mail is ripping us off - right in front of our very eye's - and like the dafties we all are we will just go ahead and accept it. It is time for us to use other Couriers etc.. or use the email & fax more. The quality of some of the staff at Royal Mail beggars belief. The other day a counter clerk argued with me about sending a letter to Belfast - She insisted Belfast was in Eire..!!? and tried to charge me international rate for my letter..

Royal Mail will still deliver your post far cheaper than any other company can, they'll also still provide the service for a fraction of the cost elsewhere in the World. Pricing In Proportion actually makes a lot of sense, larger items take more manhandling and are not as easy for the machinery to read, hence the inflated cost.

The information given out by the post office does advise that if you could fold your leters in half and put them in a smaller envelope then it will be cheaper.

I was wondering how they would work out how to get 'MORE MONEY' out of us, I can't believe that folding your paper in half can save you postage money, that is absolutely madness. I don't know how to answer your question 'what's the world coming to', but one thing's for sure 'It's not getting any better,' worse if it's doing anything at all. They'll do anything to get more money out of us. You did right to question the post office though, and I will do the same now if I can, now I know ;-b !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was publicised - possibly it's because the average letter box in a UK front-door is not big enough for A4. It takes time for the postman to scrunch it up and squeeze it through - and then the dog eats it.

yeah i sent my staff a memo last week. they have to print on both sides of the paper. and fold A4 into a smaller envelope or it wont get posted. this way we can save money as our letters are often over 60g but less than 100g.

The new rules make sense (economically) but like the "poll tax" will be very difficult - if not impossible - to in force.
So fold it in half if the contents don't suffer too much!
To answer your question - the end (unfortunately)

Have you not seen the publicity saying prices are by size, not just by weight.
If the post office says it costs more for them to sort larger letters so be it
Its just one of those things you have to live with as you will not change it.

we always use size a5 envelopes at work anyway. unless its absolutely CANT be folded (ie its a certificate) then just send everything in a smaller envelope whish is supposed to be cheaper now.
im pretty sure that post mistress will get wrong for telling her customers that!
