It is normal for menstrual blood to be brown, particularly at the beginning of your period. Basically, blood turns brown when exposed to air or when it ages - its probably due to the sloughing off of the outer most layer of the endometrium (the part of your uterine lining that you shed every month). It may turn a brighter red later in your period, or maybe not. No big deal.

Don't worry about it. The color is a result of the nutrients in your blood. If your menstraul blood is darker (and thicker), it is because you have a higher concentration of various nutrients. It's perfectly normal.
