They are, indeed, worthless, but some people seem to care very deeply about them nonetheless.
The proof of this is readily available... do a search for "2 points". Last time I did, I came up with 1868 questions that refer to this and 3468 answers. Why would so many people talk about points if they were insignificant?
I can't even begin to count how many answers I've seen to questions that are nothing more than, "Thanks for two points!". While I can see why people may give insulting or non-commital answers to questions, they only way this kind of response avoids being a non-sequitur is if those two points are a significant part of the 'answer this question' button for these people.

There is something reassuring that you are genuinely helping people. I have only had 2 answers chosen as the best. But, it made me feel good and want to answer more. It's not about the points, it's about communicating with the world.
