On a computer operating Windows, if you press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete buttons at the same time you will receive a dialogue box that asks what you want to do. You need to select the Task Manager button, in the middle of the bottom row. This will tell you what the computer is doing at that moment.

The first tab is Applications and that names each program currently running, but some are still hidden. Usually the Operating System files and those programs that run from your task bar are hidden. If you go to the Processes tab then you can see every little thing that your computer is trying to do; a long list of small programs and system processes. If you check the list some of the things you see will be clear, and others may not be so clear. If you recognize a program that shouldn’t be running you can cancel it. Under the Processes tab use the End Process button (bottom right), under the Applications Tab use the End Task button (bottom left most button).

If this still doesn’t clear up your problem then you could have a virus. A lot of viruses try to pretend that they are part of Windows so they can’t be shut down. Then they can’t be erased. So run a virus check.

If you are still having trouble then you need to reboot the computer in Safe Mode. Go to START > Help > select the Search Tab and type in “Safe Mode” then press the List Topics button. This will give you the data for your version of Windows. Shutdown the computer and after it has turned off you need to wait a few seconds for the memory (ROM) to clear. Then turn the machine on again. After the BIOS loads you start pressing the proper key (for Windows 2000 it is the F8 key). Don’t just hold down on the key, because that will cause a keyboard overflow error. Keep tapping the key. You should get a black screen with a few options on it, Select the Safe Mode option with the arrow keys and hit the Return button to start it up.

Safe Mode uses the bare minimum of the computer Operating System to start; the screen will only use 16 colors so you desktop will look strange. Run a virus check from here and it should catch your problem program. You could also use the Windows Explorer to erase the program that is running, when you don’t want it to. Or just change its directory name so it can’t be started.

That should solve your problem. If not then contact me and give me more details.
