I think the next “ism” which most sensible people will begin to fear is anti-intellectualism. Do you have a doubt that anti-intellectualism is a virulent and pervasive enemy? I can adduce numerous examples showing how it is a formidable opponent, and an adversary that is eclipsing all others in size and scope. However, instead of inundating you with details, let me underscore just one example, which should bring the point home.
In both the 2000 and 2004 election Americans opted for a man to hold the highest office in the land who professes his disdain for reading about current events, admits to basing his opinions almost solely on the opinion of his cohorts, and who articulates himself with the adeptness of a 7 year old. The American people chose this epitome of incompetence over two men who vied for the same office, who were more articulate, who were better traveled, more learned, and were more contemplative and disciplined in their decision making. Yet deliberate and extensive critical thinking was an anathema to over 50 percent of the American population, who would rather have a leader who made quick impulsive decision that exuded cowboy machismo. Now we are reaping the seeds of this anti-intellectualism.
I think historians will look back on our era as one, which planted the seeds of one of the most malevolent movements of our time, and George W. Bush will be its poster child.

Wake up and smell the coffee, folks; it's already here. Lawrence Louis is absolutely right about anti-intellectualism, but that's just one of the 14 characteristics of fascism.
