You are right, they do NOT have the same rights as a marriage. In a marriage, if one of the partners dies and the surviving spouse wants to have the body cremated, there is no problem. In a civil union, however, if one of the partners dies, the surviving partner has to get permission IN WRITING from at least 2 of the siblings or parents of the deceased, in order to have the body cremated.
Partners in a civil union do not have the same benefit rights under Social Security or with health insurance companies. They can't even file a joint income tax return as married or united in a civil relationship.
I think people in civil unions should have the same rights as married people and let's forget all this religious nonsense about what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'. I've known a lot of MARRIED people who have a disasterous relationship and I've known people in civil unions that are happy... so I don't see that it's hurting anyone or anything for them to have equal rights.

in line with probability via fact a "civil union" is only people who prefer to stay at the same time right this moment (yet in line with probability no longer the next day). Gays replace companions so in many circumstances it could rarely be a marriage (some exceptions, of direction). If we legalize guy/guy and lady/lady marraiges, then will come 3 (or greater) in a marriage. i've got already heard this suggested because it being legalized additionally. Who is acquainted with while guy/animal marriages would be next then? It never ends as all people is rarely happy with the conventional. A without postpone "marriage" is a male/lady union and could babies derive from that, they grow to be a kin. it began interior the initiating of time and Liberals should not be allowed to alter it now or interior the destiny. suited is right, and incorrect continues to be incorrect.

Because a civil union isn't marriage. And no, everybody wouldn't be happy if they got the same rights. Someone will always find something wrong.

gays won't be happy because they view it as a sort of "separate but equal" fix. And there are still many of the basic arguments against it such as the slippery slope (polygamists will want civil unions with more than one partner, Pedephiles with young children etc) and still endorses a family not between a male and a female.
The only thing it would probably solve is the issue of hospital visitation rights, inheritance issues. Most people who oppose gay marriage support gays having these rights (though they can for the most part be vested through a will or other legal documents).

They do -- if you live in New Hampshire or Vermont. Otherwise, civil unions don't exist. And they're not recognized by the federal government (for tax reasons, etc.), either. As for "why," I've never actually heard a reason why we shouldn't create civil unions -- just rambling about the sanctity of marriage and all that.

I completely agree. The word "marriage" to me is a religious term. I think they should instead of redefining marriage, is give marriage a different name in the eyes of the law and call that civil union. Separation of church and state, right?
Then when you call all marriages civil unions-- that's when civil unions will have rights.
Marriage is considered a sacrement in the Catholic church (I don't know about any other religion) so, it is a religious term, and therefore should not be ruled by the law of the land.

Because a marriage is between a man and a woman. I am glad that you asked the question because money is at the root of the issue. It is not about being accepted by society. It is about SS benefits and the like.

Anyone in a relationship has the right to be miserable and no paper document is needed to arrange for that right.
