Yes and no: I've had students begin pointe as adults and reach a relatively decent level of technique. It depends on your expectations. If you want to do it because its something you enjoy, fine. If you're aiming at a professional career, you truly needed to start earlier. You see, dancers start early because dancing is intertwined with physical development. Training teaches your body to act, move and grow a certain way: in other words, things aren't exactly in the same place for dancers as for other people (a knowledgeable orthopedist can confirm this). However, if what you want is personal achievement doing something you really like, go for it.

I teach ballet. I have one student who started her dancing with me age 16. She is now 19, into her BBO grade 5 ballet and just about to start pointework. Of course it is possible but you need to be sure you have strong enough feet and ankles for pointework and are also able to hold your center well! Ideally, you should be taking at least 2 or 3 ballet classes a week to get to the stage of doing pointework. You must be willing to work very hard and put in the effort that you need to....just remember, being a ballerina isnt all about the pretty pointe shoes :) Good Luck x

Yes. Like anything else, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

If you work hard at it and have a good teacher I think it is very possible. Natural ability & talent will help, but it is not a replacement for studying & practice.

It is very unlikely, unless you have heaps of natural talent, perfect arches, and some serious willpower to study hard with aching feet. There are many other forms of dance that are much easier to pick up and do not require such demanding physicality. If you do go on pointe, be ready to work very hard and to have some serious pain.

That is a little late to get started, but if it is what you dream of doing, give it a shot. They say you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.

i think that if you practice really, really hard and set your mind to it no matter how much pain your in, you can do it!
lol sorry if that scares you, but ive actually learned from experience that when your muscles are in pain and you just keep pushing yourself you're not making them hurt more you're actually getting stroger and the pain'll be gone faster than you think, so just keep pushing yourself! =]]
