Some say the Norse in the 10th Century, some say the Spanish in the 14th Century, some say the French in the 15th Century. Unfortunately, there are a lot of theories, yet no solid information to who was here first. No one knows for sure. No one ever kept track. If they did, those logs books are forever lost. Yet 10th Century Norse coins, don't know how they determined it was from the 10th Century, the coins must have had an image of Lief Erickkson maybe, were discovered in Novia Scotia and they searched but couldn't find any in Maine. From what I've read, they are still looking.

The Vikings were most likely the first. There are the remains of Viking settlements along the shores of Canada, and though "Vinland" has never been definitely found, it may be as far south as Maine. There are legends that the Mandans were descendants of Welshmen who landed in North America, since they were blue-eyed and I believe they spoke some words that sounded Welsh, but there has never been anything to substantiate them.

it is debatable one argument is the vikings, paritically leaf erickson and eric the red set foot in greenland and then maybe the east coast in the 1000s . the vikings were ogirnally from norway and then based in iceland. the other side is that chistopher colmubs was the first with his spanish fleet, though columbus himself was itainan. then less likely and not eupopean, some people believe that a chinese monk coame to the west coast in the 300s.

If you count the Scandonavians as Europeans, it would be Lief Erikson and his crew of vikings, who landed near what is now eastern Canada.

William and Mary. This is before last names were used. They were from Europe. The indians were so grateful that they named the college for them. William and Mary.
