There is lots of water in the air (moisture).
Light (coming from the sun or any source) is made up of ALL the colors.
When the light hits the moisture it bends the light.
It just so happens that it happens to be at the angle where blue is.
This is why sometimes we get pink...purple sky...if the angle changes those are the colors close to blue on the color spectrum.

From Wikipedia:

"Why is the sky blue?
The sky is blue partly because air scatters short-wavelength light in preference to longer wavelengths. Where the sunlight is nearly tangent to the Earth's surface, the light's path through the atmosphere is so long that much of the blue and even yellow light is scattered out, leaving the sun rays and the clouds it illuminates red, at sunrise and sunset."

Rayleigh scattering. It's the primary scattering mechanism, and it's more efficient toward the blue-violet end of the spectrum. The sky is not violet because your eyes aren't very sensitive there.

Rayleigh scattering (named after Lord Rayleigh) is the scattering of light, or other electromagnetic radiation, by particles much smaller than the wavelength of the light. It occurs when light travels in transparent solids and liquids, but is most prominently seen in gases. Rayleigh scattering of sunlight by the atmosphere is the main reason light from the sky is blue.

it's the way the sun's rays are bent through the atmosphere. that's why sunset is so colorful, because they're bending at a sharper angel and so more colors on the spectrum show.

I seem to recall my geography teacher once telling me it was something to do with the refraction of certain colours in the spectrum...
