I think this started when they were a new thing, and people wanted everyone to notice that they had a mobile phone.

When you can't hear someone very well, you automatically speak louder. That's why deaf old people shout. When using a mobile phone in a busy street, most people shout even though the person at the other end has no difficulty hearing them. Give the human race another 1,000 and we'll evolve into people who can use mobile phones.
