There was a treaty like in 1918 or so that assigned those letters to different countries. US started out with K's (the oldest stations start with K like KDKA or KQV in Pittsburgh) but needed more so it got W's. The FCC decided to put the W's mainly on the e. side of the Mississippi River but there are a few W's west of it and some old K's east of it. Mexico gets XE and XH, Canada gets C.

I think KDKA is the only exception to the W east of the Mississippi and K west of the Mississippi. It was a government regulation that put the W and K starting letter into effect, and KDKA was the first commercial radio station in the US, and began before the regulation. Not sure if the FCC was around to make the rule or not, when it went into effect....Now there is a good question...when did the FCC arise??

Actually, all radio and TV stations east of the Mississippi start with W, and all radio and TV stations west of the Mississippi start with K. It was the system which was first instituted in the 1920's when commercial radio broadcasts began.

East of the Mississippi River Stations Start with "W". West of the Mississippi they start with "K". And that's not just radio stations. It's any transmission station. Radio, Tv etc. Not sure why the selection of "W" though

This is how they started out as idenitfying channels. The East Coast all starts with W (east of the mississippi) and the West Coast starts with K(west of the mississippi) with only a few exceptions. Check out this website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_call_sign#K_and_W
