I am surprised no one has mentioned arm and hammer baking soda.
Tear off the top of a fresh box of baking soda and let it set in there, all the time. The box gives you a time line on when it is time to change to a new box.
Be sure you have cleaned out your refrigerator too, sometimes the smell is lurking even though the culprit is missing.
Good luck, Hon!

Baking soda and warm water to wipe out the ref. If that doesn`t work try straight white vinegar and wipe out the ref. Leave a container in the ref of opened box of baking soda. You can even buy the small baking sodas just for the ref. and freezers. I bought mine at Walmart in the cleaning supply aisle. Good Luck to you...

Do more frequent water changes... and make sure you syphon the dead layers in the sand.
The reef shouldn't smell that bad under normal care.

Try lemon juice if that does not work try baking soda. Maybe bleach and water as well.
