"Born with" and "inherited" are the same thing. Do you mean is it something that is learned or are we born with it?

You are asking the old "nature vs nurture" question. I think it is a little bit of both. Some of us just seem to be innately more practical and "sensible" while others seem to shine in situations where they have to "think outside the box".

Some people absolutely believe that common sense is learned - we learn not to touch something hot. Others believe absolutely that it is something we are born with. Whichever it is, in life we need both the practicality of common sense and the originality and innovation that is not common sense at all.

We all know people who are very "book smart" but couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. They are smart, so why haven't they learned "common sense"? We all know that book smart is very different from street wise. Where does common sense fit?

And of course, common sense means different things to different people and in different cultures. And consider the theory of multiple intelligences and emotional intelligence. Where do they fit in terms of common sense, and where does common sense fit with them?

It is an intriguing concept, and can generate much discussion. You may find these sites interesting. I hope these thoughts help.

Another idiotic and abusive answer from Piedpiper.Common sense actually can be cultivated especially early in life.By trial and error you can eventually make decisions based on the outcome of your trials.Humans can do this because they are capable of reasoning, the process of making educated decisions based on experience. This learning process is very similar to conditioning but goes several steps further. You may have a genetic predisposition for learning but common sense is not something that you're born with. One reason so many people lack common sense is that they are not obligated in everyday life to form these hypothesis. This may be one reason why people involved in troubleshooting and building trades seem to posses this particular skill.I know that my common sense increased dramatically after I entered the building trades.I like this question and don't care if you choose mine as best but the question is very provocative. And you can certainly inherit something without being born with it.They are in fact two different things. You can be born into an inheritance though. You can also marry into inheritance. If I married a woman and she decided to leave me all of her worldly possessions at the time of her demise then died I would then inherit those things.

Common Sense is tests of your ability and knowledge. Your not born with it and its not inherited. You develop your own. I have had common sense for years. It started when I was about 14. Years earlier I did stupid crap and never learned from it until I made up my mind too. Still I am tweaking it more and more. You can learn by mistakes in the past or just blow it off thinking you wont have to deal with it later.

that is betterly noted as information than common experience. there is no longer a actual experience in the human body noted as common, i think that should be obtrusive to you. it really is known with the common regularities in touch with the society. alongside once you enhance up, there's a form of information that you've a tendency to have. And that information is often defined because the common experience. Its called something which very just about absolutely everyone can comprehend, yet nevertheless if someone won't be able to, then ultimately he/she seems to be an fool ! it truly is how the traditional theory is.

Ah, nature vs. nurture.

I tend to think common sense is a nurture thing (no inherited as you can also formulate common sense yourself without your parents teaching) because your body/genes cant foretell what you will meet in life. At best, the body/gene can provide you with reflexes against what is bad, ie flinching away from a hot stove (heat).

It takes experience and exposure to everyday life to form common sense.

My 2 cents.

Common sense is the rarest thing amongst human beings. So rare, in fact, you had to ask about it.
