People know that hemp is a useful plant. It can be used in so many more ways than cotton. But in there lies the problem. If you've ever studied history you'd know that king cotton has been around for along time. If industry started to use hemp instead of cotton then the cotton industry would go out of business. This would cause a detrimental effect on the economy which would eventually pick up anyways. But of course the powers that be with the money don't want to be replaced so they embark on various smear campaigns against hemp. Hence the taboo associated with hemp. Blame the fundies if you must blame anyone. Their behind most of these type of conspiracies and bush getting elected and relected.

It is usually because people automatically associate hemp with getting high. But I am not going to get into the whjole science lecture of mating plants to get the narcotic effect.

Hemp is quite useful and quickly renewable. Rope, clothes, paper... there is even Hemp Butter (like peanut butter without all the chemicals and salts)

Before prohibition, and during, hemp was a large crop in the US. There was so much pressure to make booze legal that the government legalized it and made pot illegal in order to appease those who were against anything mind altering.
