My mom says that my family is rich. Well, I kinda belive it because my cousin has millions of dollars; and another thing is, my mom and three sisters have their hair changed every month. I don't particapate because I don't know if I should do that to my hair. Anyway, my mom says that I should only be friends with rich kids only. I'm 19 years old and she still tells me this. Is it right for her to do so?

I don't know if this will help or not, but we live in Malibu,California. And for those who said that I was making it up, my house is on 9.5 acres, it's 3,041 sqft, and it's retail price is $2,400,000.

If your 19 then you should know the answer to this. You are an adult. Why would you ask other people this question? It shows that you obiously wernt brought up right. Thats not your fault though. You should be friends with whomever you want. Dont pick and choose just because of wealth. That would be shallow and narrow minded. You would be called a stuck up b*tch from some people. And honestly, the best friends you can have are people who arnt rich b/c they know the true value of friendship. Where as rich kids are normally stuck up and value money more than friends. Good luck and tell your mom to stay out of it.
And ps. I get my hair, nails, and toes done each month and I'm not rich. That stuff doesnt proof your rich. Just proves that you like to look nice.

What does wealth have to do with who you see socially? Obviously by the way you present yourself you are either fishing for attention or a sad product of our educational system. In either aspect I pity you, If you were truly a person of any quality breeding you would have been taught a lady NEVER discriminates another on the basis of social standing! Obviously you need to look into etiquette for the uneducated. Grow up and realize that high school is over darling, and people who can't let that go need a serious reality check, You're 19 why aren't you busy with college? Doing something to benefit yourself or society.!??!!

you know it's not right that is why you are questioning it. You should not judge people before you know them. You should make friends with who ever interests you, then decide if you want to be friends with them. When we are younger we think we should do everything our parents say and that every thing they say is right because they are the parent, however that is so not true!! And it's cool of you to realize that being that close minded is not the "right" way. They say don't judge a book by it's cover, so why would you judge people by how much money they have. I say go find a bum on the street bring her home and tell your mom its your new BFF! Just kidding!!! Good Luck

haha... let me tell ya something. Not to say anything bad about your family but just because your family can buy a BMW and someone else has to buy a used Ford, you both get in the same way, by opening the door and sitting your butt in the seat. Just becuase you have money dosen't make you any better than anyone else. I know people that think the way your mom does... and everyone I've met is an ***. Like I said, not to diss your family but that type of mentality is nothing but ignorance. Hang out with who ever you want to hang out with, wheither they have money or not.
so no, I don't think its right.

It is VERY superficial (shallow and closed-minded) for your mom to tell you that you can only be friends with rich kids. If you only make friends with people who have money, it will change your attitude about things and pretty soon, you will become snotty like those f*cking b*tches on Laguna Beach and My Super Sweet 16. Money changes your attitude and they way you treat people. You start thinking you're better than people with less money. This is why people with less money are better friends to have and they are more loyal. Because they don't have money to change them. Don't listen to your mom. Find a friend who is loyal, trustworthy, and down to earth. And if she happens to be from a family that has money, then so be it. But if she's from a family that doesn't have alot of money....it doesn't matter.

No it isn't right, how does she think you will fair in the real world were most do not have that type of lifestyle. I had the same issues and I found out later that my mother was terrified that I would marry outside of "our class" or people would only be friends because we had money, like I was going to start out conversations with how much cash do you have in the bank!? Talking with a wide variety of people is normal, it is how you figure out were you stand in the world. Make friends with whom ever you choose but keep money out of it that is the worst way to wreck any relationship friendship or otherwise. Good Luck.

Either your mom is just plain ignorant, or she's being over- protective of you. But the fact is this, you have the right to choose your own friends. Just be careful who you get close to. Not just because your family has money, but just because some people are scandalous and could try to take advantage of you. People get played by so- called friends all the time. It's not just exclusive to rich people.

No it isn't a good policy. You can be rich and lazy as the day is long (especially if you inherited it). Or you can be poor and be on your way to being the next big thing.
Show me a stock boy with a dream and I will show you a sucessful person. Show me a boy with no dream...and I will show you a stock boy.
Pick your friends based on positive attributes. Some may be rich and some may be poor.
Try to respectfully disagree with your mom. That will help her see you are old enough to choose your own friends.

I think you know in your heart it isn't right, or you wouldn't be posting this question. There are good and bad rich people and poor people -- too bad that the rich people think that they are smarter and better than everyone else. Let them know the color of their hair doesn't change who they are on the inside. And that is where they obviously need to get some work done!
