I was five years old.
I recall that a candy bar was 5 cents apiece.
A pack of gum was also 5 cents. Bubble gum was a penny. Just finding change in the gutter on the way to the store could buy you a whole lotta white sugar.
It was safe for a five year old to walk the three blocks to the store, and it was safe for the same 5 year old to climb under the fence at the back of the yard, cross the railroad tracks, and walk into the open land where the diary cows grazed and the gopher snakes lurked!

I remember when I used to play outside all day, come home exhausted and filthy. Woke up the next day and went to do the same.
I remember when it actually snowed in the winter and school would be canceled because there was so much snow that you couldn't find your car or even the sidewalk.
I remember the ice cream man coming, and even if you were poor you could afford some, because there was no such thing as a $1.99 spongebob Popsicle.

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions had an echo in so much space
And when you're out there - without care
Yeah I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much
Does that make me Crazy?

I remember when history did not include anything past the Korean War. No Viet Nam, no oil shortage (gas was $0.26/gal), no Osama Ben, no Hezbollah, just a nice simple cold war with the USSR.
