Not to be gross, but you should look at both. Blood in your stool or from your anus can be very dangerous! Same with your nasal cavity although less serious.

I don't know about others but I look for blood and the color of the mucus to see if there is a problem I need to take care of.

I agree it's nasty, but it's necessary. They probably check for blood- traces of blood in either is usually not a good sign. For older people, it's also a way to catch signs of colon cancer early.
Gross, but better than ending up dead

and ...to be truly frank, i think it's because mucus and poop are very INTERESTING!
they are!

and maybe it's to check that the stuff isn't on ur hands.

When you get older, you want to know if your are bleeding in places that you cannot see.
