The first polar ice core was drilled in Greenland in 1956.

Vostok Station in Antarctica, established by the Soviets in 1957, began ice coring in 1970. They have drilled a number of ice cores wells on that site. The deepest was stopped in 1996 at 3623 meters (11,886 feet).
