It is plugged in. I cant update it. It is a new 30gb ipod photo. Please tell me whats going on/what to do

The same thing happened to my iPod when I first got it. Yours might be frozen, so try resetting it: Turn the hold switch off and on a few times, then press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 10 seconds. You might have to repeat this step. If this doesn't help, try plugging your iPod into a different USB port. If it still doesn't work, try reinstalling your itunes software.

won't recognise it at all or you just can't update?
is there a little lock next to the "GB" at the bottom of the iTunes window? if there is, just go your iPod preferences and select "manually update"

Did you install the software for it? That usually helps.
