I highly recommend ferrets! They are very interactive, and also intelligent. They are very much like dogs in their behaviour. A lot of parrot types are very interactive and intelligent too, but I don't know very much about birds. I'd go for a ferret, I had one when I was a kid, and they make excellent pets. The males have quite a strong body-odor (plus they spray just like male cats and dogs, and that stuff smells too), but once they get neutured that apparently goes away. Ferrets are very playfull, and easily trainable.

I HIGHLY recommend ferrets. They are hyperactive bundles of energy, enthusiasm, and play. I've had 6 so far, and every one has a distict personality and is a joy to have around. They can easily be litter-trained and are quite smart- you can tell by their curiosity and interactivity when they play.
Of course, do the research before purchasing any pet, and mayvbe find a ferret group near you. For example, I'm a member of the houston area ferret association. (http://ferret.meetup.com/88/?gj=sj5)
happy hunting and good luck!

Ferrets are highly interactive and playful, but they are not dogs! They don't "come when called," rather they come when yor try to keep them away. They think it's funny. They love to be chased. They are probably more predatory than most cats and dogs, so be careful with small pets and babies. They are not really aggressive otherwise, but some of them nip to get you to chase them. Be sure to know a lot about them before you get one.

If you like noise and high activity, there are a lot of birds out there. If you don't like animals that have heavy scents or a lot of cleaning, don't go for the ferrets, rabbits, or other small critters. ...Maybe a tank full of fantail goldfish. They are actually interesting to watch and don't make a peep...!

I would go back to rats if you can keep them in a place where the cat can't get to them. My hubby has a cat and I have a rat, and we haven't had any problems. Rats are extremely intelligent and easy to train if your willing to put the time into it. Plus, they are super affectionate if you are affectionate to them. Good luck!

a pot bellied pig!! I got a baby and he is so cute!! I only paid 20 bucks for him! They are the 4th most intelligent animal in the world. You can train them just like a dog. And they can share your cats litter box!! I have had mine for about a week and a half, he is litter box trained and comes to his name. He also loves our dog.

Check up. Depending on where you are, some of those are illegal. Such as.. if you are in california then gerbils, ferrets and some parrots are illegal.
