Co-operation, or cooperation, refers to the practice of people or greater entities working in common with commonly agreed-upon goals and possibly methods, instead of working separately in competition.Cooperation is the antithesis of competition, however, the need or desire to compete with others is a very common impetus that motivates individuals to organize into a group and cooperate with each other in order to form a stronger competitive force.

Collaboration refers abstractly to all processes wherein people work together —applying both to the work of individuals as well as larger collectives and societies. As an intrinsic aspect of human society, the term is used in many varying contexts such as science, art, education, and business.

Cooperation & collaboration do not differ in terms of whether or not the task is distributed, but by virtue of the way in which it is divided; in cooperation the task is split (hierarchically) into independent subtasks; in collaboration cognitive processes may be (heterarchically) divided into intertwined layers. In cooperation, coordination is only required whenassembling partial results, while collaboration is << ...a coordinated, synchronous activity that is the result of a continued attempt to construct and maintain a shared conception of a problem>>"

If you co-operate with someone, you may or may not actually help them out with what they're trying to do but at the very least you don't hinder them or stop them. If you collaborate with them, you actually positively, actively assist them in accomplishing their goal.
