When I was growing up in the 40s & 50s we didn't know we were poor, because every-one else was in the same boat.We would borrow cups of sugar,a packet of tea,or some milk from each other. It was a natural way of living. There were plenty of street games then,I feel sorry for the kids these days, with their playstations, x-boxes etc.the kids these days are put under far too much pressure to pass exams, get the latesr gear etc.it's no wonder the suicide rate for youngsters is so high. They have been taught to be greedy & to demand everything NOW!

You have hit the nail on the head for me.I was brought up in the 50`s and 60`s people were a lot more friendlier then and a lot better mannered.I cannot stand the bad manners of today and lack of command of the (our Great) English language, and when was the last time someone said pardon to you instead of A.
People only care about material things now (poor sods), around where i live people brag about the rising prices of their houses down the local pub,how sad is that?
My immediate neighbours are actually quite friendly, including a bank manager, a computer shop owner and a personnel sec.
and they have all been very neighbourly to my family in the last 8 years.Too many people today will only make an effort to know you if they think you can offer them something,i.e freebies or "guess who he knows, can you get any (free) tickets".

I think that people were long ago, were poorer, but happier, not so interested in material things, they were much more interested in survival, yeah an perhaps being better neighbour's. I remember my neighbours as a child were great, you are right it is defiantly everyone for themselves, that is why there are a lot of lonely older people out there, who have no family, and their friends have passed on, its sad, many are sick. and need help.

Yes I agree the old days were better for being neighbourly, nowadays people prefer to keep to themselves, some peope were poor of course but not all,it was nice to have a neighbour to talk to over the garden fence, nowadays you are lucky if you get one word out of them

Some people are richer, some not. I don't think people are any more selfish than they used to be. It's just the lifestyles we live. We don't work locally anymore. We leave our homes, get into our cars without seeing any of our neighbours and do the same when we leave work. It's just the way daily lives have changed. Good old economics eh?

They were poor, but probably did not know it. Depends how far back you go, but most people did not live to be 50. I think today, this day and age are the best of times. I don't want to change the advances we have made on all levels for a John-boy Walton existence.

I am not 50 but I would agree. I am 32 and it is the same in my neighbor hood. I can go out side for hours and never see a soul. They just dont get out and talk much but everyone is so busy now adays. I mean my 2 kids play sports year around so it is hard for me sometimes also. But I hear what you are saying.

I don't know that people were poorer when I was growing up, but they knew the value of a dollar AND they knew the value of people ... family, friends, neighbors, even strangers. We're fortunate in our neighborhood that we all watch out for each other. My husband is no longer able to mow the lawn or shovel snow. We don't even have to ask anyone to do it for us. They just do it. We get the mail for each other and watch each others homes when someone is away.
A big difference I see is when I was growing up it was common for kids to offer to mow lawns or shovel snow for people, not for money, just out of kindness. We live in such a material world that most kids want money for those types of things.
In our family we still do for each other. Helping our 86 year old mother. Babysitting for grandchildren. Etc.
We live in such a fast-paced, disposable world. People need to slow down and appreciate what and who they have. And bring God back into our lives. When a relationship with God was more important to more people we were a better nation.

I agree, and blame our reliance on the image makers. These people are after all only building up profiles, to get advertising work, and they prey on the impressionable, do they share the proceeeds, no, they have bodyguards, to keep the unwashed away, get n wise, stop being brainwashed, start common sense movements, get rid of the freaks.
