I think Homer is the oldest and greatest poet. People may think think that Odyssey and Iliad are literature but in fact they are very large poems. They were written around 800 BC and they include every concept that a poet may write about. Love, war, friendship, betrayal, death, heroism, god, sacrifice, fear, egoism, regret, jealousy, beauty, family, travel, mistake and anything else a human can live it's all there. The greatest theatrical writers and poets of ancient time (Sophocles, Euripides etc) were influenced by Homer continuing his stories even if they lived 400 years later. And these works were the seeds of though for any poet since.

Likely, we may never know. When the library of Alexandria was burned (either by Emperor Theodosius I or by the Muslim conquerors in the 7th Century) the vast number of works which were destroyed robbed our modern world of the opportunity to enjoy works from authors who may have rivaled the works of Shakespeare, Frost, and Angelou.

Shakespeare's sonnets are the best. For modern poets, Robert Frost for descriptive poetry, e. e. cummings for resonance.

I think there were and are several great poets of the world....so its hard to name just one, but i would say Edgar Allen Poe is definitely among one of the best. In my opinion, anyway. :)

I would agree with Giorgos D about Homer. He wrote the Iliad and the Odessey.
