I'm planning on writing some reggae tonight but I don't know what is typical as far as instrumentation. Specifically, I will be rearranging March from The Marriage Of Figaro for a reggae band, and need to know what instruments the band would have.

Classic Reggae (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh etc.) used a line up that was similar to that of a rock band during the same era:
Drum kit, Electric Bass, Electric Guitars and a keyboard (usually B3 Organ or clavinet), and a percussionist playing congas, timbales etc.

as a person who lives in the Caribbean we hear a lot of reggae and reggae has evolved quite considerably over the past few years. but the most fundamental instruments are the steel pan and drums also the guitar.p.s. with a lot of bass

The mainstay of reggae to this day has been the bass and drums – big beats and lots of bass, with only the occasional mid to high frequency instruments. This was taken to an extreme with the dub reggae style, which ended up being simply drum, bass and the occasional ghostly snatch of sample from other tracks.

the main spine of all reggae is the drum and bass line, drum and bass are essential and usually some snazzy keyboard and echo etc
