Wusthoff or Henckel are about the best. You can get a lower end line of these at a Target that will be pretty decent. Kitchen Aid also makes a nice line of knives. It all depends on what you mean by too expensive. You should be able to get a decent set of any of these for less than $100. Once you've found what you like, check on Ebay!

Henckels & Wustof make several lines from very $$$ to entry level. Both brands are highly thought of. Another alternative is Cutco, high quality product as well.

Perhaps do an online search at Bed Bath & Beyond for some ideas.

Wustof are probably the top of the line, but even they have some affordable sets. Its the kind where you might have to invest a little bit more than you otherwise would have, but you'll have these babies for life. And learn how to use a steel-- use it a a few minutes every time you use a knife and they'll stay incredibly sharp!

It's hard to beat Chicago Cutlery. Nothing fancy, but very well made, good quality steel, and will last for decades with reasonable care.

Wustof. You can find them pretty much anywhere. I got mine online at Foodnetwork.com.

Good luck.
