I know he's a free agent, and he's gonna demand more, but c'mon...he scored 18.6 per game AND he was team captain for 2 years. Why not just re-sign him? Somebody tell me why (apart from Indiana giving the Hawks a first-rounder) Billy Knight is so comfortable with parting with Harrington.

So they can at least get something for him. Otherwise, as an unrestricted free agent, he would just sign with another team and the Hawks get nothing in return for him. By trading him, they at least get something of value back (a first round draft pick).

They would prefer to keep the money and build for the future. Currently there is a battle going on between ownership, they do not want to sign long term contracts and they do not want to take any back (via trades). Until that is settled players will only get one year contracts.
