I am planning to assemble a desktop PC and I'm torn between the two processors (Celeron and Pentium4). Which is better, performance-wise? Are there any advantages and/or disadvantages?

P4. never used celeron's or AMD's but I always heard that they were less than great.

The celeron is a P4 chip that has some of the functions disabled. It will operate pretty much the same way with the same performance except for when you get into gaming , video and graphics. As a wierd twist of fate, intel learned that when they disabled those functions, it actually increased the amount of L2 Cache on the chip which makes it better for number crunching and data manipulation.

As a side note, the Celeron was actually developed as a cheaper alternative to remain competitive against the lower priced processors made by AMD and a few other companies.

The Celeron is Intels "bargain" chip. It was designed for computers that were going to be "basic, no frills". The big difference (besides price) is that the FSB (front side bus) is basically cut in half on the Celerons. They are good stable chips. AMD also has a line of "bargain" processors called the "sempron" chip. Just like the celeron, they are for "bargain" systems and do not perform as well as their counterparts.

Hope I helped...

Pentium IV is way better than Celeron. The Celeron is just a cheaper processor for lower-end pcs. It will cost more, but will perform better.

P4 has speed advantage but costs more. Celeron is less expensive and does what most people want to do. Unless you're a heavy action game users it's probably not worth the extra money to buy a P4.

I like Celeron more... Dont really know for sure... but on the computer that i assembled, P4 makes the whole computer worn out quickly... but on another computer with Celeron, it lasts longer...

I've used celeron, AMD and P4. AMD is the best currently for its price, then P4, lastly Celeron cause its slow.

Pentium is the better chip. Celeron is a bargain chip because it has less on-board memory that the pentium so it is cheaper.

P4 is faster. Celeron is a low-end CPU.
