I want to start running, but I give up when I get close to a mile because I get winded. I have tried starting walking briskly, then runnning and alternating. I walk about 2-3 miles daily, or bike and roller blade, but I don't seem to have stamina in my lungs for running. Also, I am not running as fast as I can.

Is this common for beginning runners? What do you recommend?

won't say my age, but I am in good health, not a smoker and as I said I keep fit in other ways...i.e. walking, biking, rollerblading.

Some great advice/answers so far! Thanks all!

It is very common for beginning runners.

You are doing it right. Do walk/runs, slowly increasing the distance and the amount that you are running. Continue to do biking and skating as cross training. Have fun with it.

It will help if you set some goals (ie go X miles per week, or go 1 mile in X minutes) or get someone to try it with you.

Yes, that is VERY common for beginning runners. You have to build up your endurance. The only way to build it up is to run a little farther every day. You may be able to build up more endurance by doing sprint drills, which is alternating back and forth between 30 second sprints and 90-120 seconds of slow jogging or brisk walking. Do that 8-12 times once or twice a week. Other then that, it's just going to take more exercise and time. Stick with it -- it's good for you and you'll be able to run a 5K before you know it.

Yes this is very normal for beginning runners. The more you run, the more you will build up endurance and stamina. You have to start out just running a mile or so. After about a week or two you should try and increase to two miles and so on.

I have run 5 marathons. But when I started it was a challenge.. I noticed that days were I had a really tough time,, usually if you do it again, it will get much better..
Your lungs are not conditioned yet.. Its best to do what you can,, and gradually improve.. At some point,, you will be able to go from 2miles to 5miles, with no prblm.. Its slow at first, but then the changes become more rapid, then they slow down again..

It's not uncommon and you don't say exactly how long you have been doing this. I would give it a try for 3 - 5 times a week for about a month and if you don't see any progress at that point, perhaps a visit to your doctor might be in order. Also, you don't say how old you are, whether or not you smoke, your weight and these could all be factors as well.

learn proper breathing techniques.
i know how crazy it sounds, but if you aren't getting enough oxygen in, it can't help your muscles, which is what you need to get stamina.
