I like the show. The people always seem to be happy with the new clothes selected for them

I don't think it's right to change a person's style - or that a person has to fit a certain mold to be happy.
However, many of the people on that show are in a rut of some sort...a mother who let herself go after 3 kids; a college student who doesn't know how to dress like a serious working person; etc. Many of the people, although hesitant at first, seem to enjoy having new clothing selected for them. Many of them realize that dressing in sweats everday without brushing their hair isn't the best way to appear professional and they admit they don't feel that great about themselves.
So, it is not necessarily superficial that people want to look put-together and wear properly fitting garments - they simply are too busy or too clueless to remedy their situation. The entire goal of the show is that the stylist and two friends/family members select outfits that the person would like (but might not necessarily have the time, money or guts to buy it). Bottomline: they're trying to bring out the best in the person which already exists but is being kept hidden.
That show "The Swan" that used to be on is a completely different story though...

I know what you mean. Why try to change someones personal style when every-ones knows what makes them happy and what it is that they are looking to design and looking for in a designer.

I don't think that the are allowing people to be themselves, although at the same time, they may want and welcome the personal style tips :)

I think it's a combination. I mean they take a girl who is smart and has a great personality and tells them they are wrong. But they do have a sense of fashion.
