A general doctor will send you right back to another gynecologist. Your doctor was right Loosing weight will help with PCOS and you won't need metformin.

metformin doesnt treat pcos, it treats insulin resistance (which can be a symptom of pcos). Unless you have a problem with sugar levels, this is not the way to go.
You might want to see an endocrinologist if you're having metabolism issues.

Metformin has been proven to improve fertility in PCOS. If another gynecologist won't give it, try a reproductive endocrinologist. (basically fertility specialist)

You could go see an endocrinologist but if your gyno doesn't think you need met. you prob. don't. PCOS tends to make it harder to lose weight. Exercise and a better diet (way of eating) is always helpful on or off meds. Good luck!
