Any type of a relationship is aimed at giving one an extension beyond his usual and mundane existence. With our many senses we are definitely creatures who need to take in copies if not real essences of the world around us and store it into our brains. Stories allow us to have an interaction where we fully consumate ourselves with another being intellectually and bypass the senses (except for the eyes which of course have to take in the words). We take our lives and everything that happened to us and go with a character and his travels, thoughts, and explorations and the relationship is fuller than what we can obtain with a human being who is always reticent on presenting themselves fully to us. In short there is greater intimacy from a fictional character than a real one.
