I've had severe back pain for about a year now, I've had blood tests, X-rays that come back normal. My Dr has never called saying I need to come in to discuss results. I got an MRI done, and a couple of days later, I got a call saying the Dr wanted to see me to discuss the results...I think that means they actually may have found something. What do you think?

I actually want to hear worst case scenarios so I can prepare myself...before I got this call, my biggest fear was that they would find nothing. I really just would like to know what's wrong after unduring pain like this for so long...Thanks everyone

Yeah, that's a bit strange. I remember when I had Cervical cancer and my Dr. called me & told me over the phone and wanted to schdule a hystrictomy for the next day - but I did have something wrong with me - I had cancer. I think it's a bit strange - but, maybe there was an option (and yes maybe they found something) and he just wants to discuss that with you. He sounds like a good Dr to me. I'd definitely be interested to see what he had to say that's for sure.

Well it's hard to say that. Most likely not necessarely something real bad... you might just need an epidural. or it might not be nothing
I work at a dr. s office and to tell u the truth sometime we are just slow and we call people that had mri to follow up to fill the schedule sometimes the doctor is too busy to review the MRI and we call the patients when we have the results to make sure that the dr. is reading the results.
Dont worry if the made you come in urgently then I would worry but if not its just a follow up

I have had a doctor call me in to discuss the results and everything was normal. They would not discuss them over the phone even though I asked them too. I had to pay another co-pay just to find out nothing was wrong.
It could also be something very minor and wants to discuss options of treatment.

Many doctors have a policy of only calling if they find something wrong, but there has been a shift in practice to reviewing results no what they say.
Two reasons, so they don't miss something (if you dont get called, etc), the other is to take the next step if they don't find anything.
So, if your doctor has usually only called if they found something, chances are that's what happened (unless he's started a better policy).

Well some of the signs point out towards pregnancy but to be sure take a over the counter pregnancy tester and test yourself so that way u rule out pregnancy and sometimes doctors call you after the test results to explain the results and if there is any steps that you need to follow

It depends on the doctor. If the MRI doctor called and asked you to come in to discuss, I would bet that there is something in the MRI that has to be treated. Most of the time if nothing is wrong, they either don't call you at all or if they do, they just it came out negative. I would go if he wants you in to discuss or you could call them and just come out and ask them if the MRI did show anything. Good luck.

Ask if you can discuss this over the phone (results). If they found nothing, then no need for you to go back in and pay for an office visit. However, they should have no qualms about telling you the results on the phone. I would push for that and if they still insist you HAVE to go in, then you'll HAVE to go in to speak to the doctor.

yes. even if he did not find anything or just something minor Dr's are not allowed to discuss it with you over the phone anymore they have this thing called hippa which is a privacy notice and prevents them from doing so...or maybe he just wants to refer you to physical therapy for your back. Dont get to scared this happens all the time to me.

My friend's doctor called her in after she had blood tests taken. She was really really nervous and we pondered this same question..
In the end it turned out she was low on iron and needed to take vitamin supplements. So no, it doesn't always somehting is wrong, but it might be.

he may want to discuss different options with you, pain therapy, pain med, pain blockers, go ahead and go in, you never really get to ask all on the phone, and I prefer eye to eye contact, and in some places you get charged for a phone consult
