dvd-r support 99% of all standaloone dvd players
while dvd+r supports about 90
otherwise it is about what kind of drive you have.

It used to be said that DVD-R discs were more compatible with stand-alone DVD players, but I don't know if that's the case with the newer ones today. As far as data, whatever discs work best in your pc's drive would be the logical choice.
