Get AnyDVD from Slysoft.
21 day free trial and with it you can copy the DVD (and music CDs) directly to a HDD folder, and from there burn it to a DVD-+R.
If the movie is too big, get DVDshrink (free) and it will shrink the movies to fit a single layer DVD blank. Difference in quality not discernible.

dvdDecrypter
dvdFabDecrypter
dvdShrink

One of these should work for you, and some can even make it region-free and/or remove the copy protection. Also, I found a good free burner called DeepBurner to put it on a dvd.
